Health benefits of eating fish

Eating fish regularly can reduce the risk of various diseases and disorders, most notably cardiovascular disease. Research shows that eating fish every week reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by reducing blood clots and inflammation, lowering blood pressure and boosting 'good' cholesterol.

Fish (especially oily fish) is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. A review in the British Medical Journal recommends fish or fish oil supplements to prevent heart attack and the best source of Omega-3 fatty acids is fish, rather than fish oil capsules.

White fish such as cod are a good source of low-fat protein and minerals.

Oily fish such as salmon and mackerel have the highest concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Crab, lobster and mussels are from the shellfish group and contain selenium, thought to have cancer-fighting properties.
